John 5:46-47 ESV
For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

In the passage from John’s Gospel, Jesus reveals a profound truth about the writings of Moses—they point to Him. Moses, chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, was not only a leader and lawgiver but also a prophet. Through his writings, God laid the foundation for understanding His redemptive plan, which ultimately finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

Let’s journey back to the beginning, to the book of Genesis. In Genesis 3:15, after the fall of humanity, God promises a Savior: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” This protoevangelium, or “first gospel,” is the earliest prophecy of the Messiah, foretelling the victory of Jesus over sin and death.

As we continue through the Pentateuch, we encounter numerous types and shadows of Christ. In the story of Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22), we see a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of Jesus, the beloved Son offered for the salvation of humanity. The Passover lamb, whose blood protected the Israelites from the angel of death (Exodus 12), prefigures Jesus, the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice brings redemption for all who believe.

Furthermore, the entire sacrificial system outlined in Leviticus points forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sins finds its fulfillment in the atoning death of Christ, who became the perfect sacrifice once and for all.

In Deuteronomy, Moses prophesies the coming of a prophet like himself: “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen” (Deuteronomy 18:15). This prophecy finds its fulfillment in Jesus, who not only speaks the words of God but is the Word made flesh (John 1:14).

Through the writings of Moses, God paints a vivid picture of His plan of salvation, culminating in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Every story, every sacrifice, every prophecy points to Him. As we read the Scriptures, let us open our hearts to see Jesus revealed in every page, and may our faith be strengthened as we behold the beauty of God’s redemptive plan.
